1845, 1st ed., x, (1), 290 pp. Later half calf over marbled boards with gilt morocco label, all edges marbled. Contents slightly foxed and occasionally very lightly stained. Ex Bibliotheca Didina et Pinguina (Bubb Kuyper; their sales nr. 41, November 2004, lot nr. 1604).
This is the first edition of this book. A sequel was published in London in 1847 (Adventures on the Western Coast of South America and the Interior of California, etc., Sabin 17143).
The book contains chapters on the Falkland Islands, Chile, Juan Fernández Island, the Galápagos Islands, the Marquesas, the Tuamotu Archipelago and Tahiti. the author also gives an account on whaling, including his personal experience of killing a whale (p.68ff). Overall a very good copy of this scarce true first edition.
