Two volumes in one. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper covered boards, 8vo., pp. xv, (1), 278 and pp. vii, (1), 314.

The spine divided in six compartments by five raised and gilt tooled bands. Maroon label in the second compartment with the title in gilt. A chromolitographed frontispiece in volume I and a tinted one in volume II. Together in volumes I and II a total of 40 woodengravings, of which 7 full page plus 2 folding tables.

Extremities worn, corners bumped, leather from the tail of the spine partly missing. Deaccession stamp on title page of vol. I with no other ex-library markings. Endpapers browned, but the text pages bright and clean.

Leopold von Orlich was a German army officer. Born in 1804 in former Eastern Prussia, died in London in 1860. In 1842 he went to India to study warfare. This book is about his experiences there, including his observations in daily life. Very rare.
